sticky dates soaked in espresso blended with frozen banana with a generous amount of oat milk — very yummy and also doubles as a morning pick me up for when we want something quick that packs a punch. she’s got 28 grams of protein from the protein powder and peanut butter making this a very scrumptious way to get that extra boost.
this is the smoothie that i come back to when i forget and then remember again that I do enjoy me a nice smoothie from time to time. if you have never tried dates in a smoothie before then this is the perfect sort of segue to get you there ;)
Espresso Chocolate Date Smoothie
yields 1 smoothie / 2 cups
2 dates - pitted / seeds taken out
1/4 cup - espresso, cold brew or coffee
1 banana - frozen
1/2 cup - oat milk
2 scoops (46 g) - chocolate protein powder ( I used Orgain brand )
2 tbsp - smooth peanut butter ( I used Peanut Butter & Co. )
What you will need:
a blender or Nutribullet
espresso machine / maker or coffee / cold brew
Instructions
Step 1 - Soak the dates + gather ingredients
First things, first gather all the essential mise en place, because there’s nothin worse then going to make something and not having all the stuffs !
I always make this with freshly brewed espresso to soak the dates in but I suppose coffee and or cold brew could also work. I do think using the hot espresso or coffee does add a little *something something* and also helps to soften the dates but in the end I don’t think making these substitutions is gonna have a big change in the final product.
Step 2 - Blend + serve
After the dates have been soaked with the espresso, coffee and or cold brew. Simply add all the ingredients to a blender or blender cup. Using a frozen banana really helps to make a creamy smoothie without having to add in any ice that could water it down. Once all the ingredients have been added in, blend till smooth and transfer to the cup of your choice. You can also sort of prep this in advance by pouring the smoothie into ice cubes to blend later for some convenient smoothie meal prep ! After blending all that is left is to enjoy your morning pick me up smoothie.
